Where they differ
Phone first, or desktop
Captions runs on iPhone, Android and the web. If you shoot and edit on your phone, Captions is built for that. Selects is a desktop app for macOS on Apple Silicon and Windows 11.
Generated people, or your footage
Captions features AI avatars, AI Twins and Prompt to Video. Selects starts from what you shot: it analyzes your shots, faces and speakers, and generates video, images or voice only when you ask.
How deep the timeline goes
Captions' help pages document editing at the shot level: split, trim, reorder. Every Selects result opens on a multi-track timeline with picture, sound and caption tracks you can edit by hand.
Handoff to editing software
Selects hands off to Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve and Avid Media Composer. Captions' export page lists a video file and an SRT download; we didn't find a project export to editing software.
FAQ
Is Selects a good Captions app alternative?
Yes, if you edit your own footage on a computer and want a timeline you can work on by hand. Selects edits by chat, syncs multicam and hands off to Premiere, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve and Avid Media Composer.
If you want AI avatars, or to edit on your phone, Captions is built for that.
Does Selects add captions automatically?
Yes. Selects builds them from the transcript once your footage is analyzed. Pick one of 14 looks or describe your own, then fix any word before you apply.
Ask chat to translate them and the new language goes on its own track.
Can I edit with chat in Selects?
Yes. Describe the edit, like a target length, the take to keep or when to cut to B-roll, and Selects builds a draft. Keep giving notes in the same chat, or change the cut by hand while it works.
Can Selects dub my video into another language?
Yes. The Translate tool in Generate audio translates and re-voices a clip of up to 5 minutes into any of 29 languages. It runs on credits.
What does Selects run on?
A Mac with Apple Silicon (M1 or later) or a PC on Windows 11. It's a desktop app, and it needs an internet connection.
